Jetsunma Niru Rana
A Short Biography of Jetsunma Niru Rana

Jetsunma Neeru Rana is Ratnashri’s consort and a Vajrayana guru in her own right. She was conferred the title of ‘Jetsunma’ (Nath or Bhattarika in Nepali) by H.E. Karma Thinley Rinpoche in May 2008.

Jetsunma was born in Sankhu, Kathmandu, Nepal into a very respectable Thapa family that has a long and proud history of serving Nepal. She is the second child of her parents Krishna Bahadur Thapa and Lalita Thapa. From an early age, she demonstrated all the fearless qualities that would later be required to support and augment the work of Ratnashri. Her sisters and brothers describe her as extremely confident, courageous and compassionate.

After completing her education, Jetsunma worked as a horticulturalist and later as Executive Housekeeper in the hotel industry in Kathmandu breaking a strong family tradition on restriction for women members to work outside their house. It was during this time that Jetsunma met Ratnashri. With Ratnashri’s encouragement, she studied the Buddha Dharma and took refuge with Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche in April 1991.

Since her marriage with Ratnashri in 1994, Jetsunma has been supporting Ratnashri’s spiritual practice wholeheartedly. She has also been the main-stay of the Byoma Kusuma Buddhadharma Sangha for the last 16 years after Ratnashri entered into a 21 year long retreat.

During this time, with Jetsunma’s unstinting perseverance, skilful guidance and managerial skills, the Sangha has grown extensively and become stronger. But that is not all. She also shouldered the responsibility of supporting Ratnashri in his retreat at a time when there was very little financial resources available. A formal Sangha had not yet been formed. However, through her tireless effort she made sure Ratnashri's retreat went smoothly without any disturbances from external causes – the potential of which were many to say the least.

During the same period, she took, in addition to her already immense responsibilities, the work of constructing the main building, which now houses Ratnashri’s retreat and the main hall for Sangha activities. Before the construction of the building, Sangha members met on an empty land where the current building now stands under open sky.

Even now, when Byoma Kusuma management committee looks after the everyday affairs of the Sangha, Jetsunma is tirelessly providing her excellent guidance and support. She also regularly represents Ratnashri and the Sangha in formal meetings, and is always inviting highly venerated Gurus and Rinpoches to Bishalnagar for the benefit of the Sangha. She is also an ever present figure during all the Sangha activities.
